Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
NAME: Su Li
NICKNAME(s): Susie, Sulu, Li.
NAME ORIGIN: SU From Chinese 素 "plain", or else 肃 or 肅 which both mean "respectful". LI Means "plum" or "judge" in Korean; means "plum tree" in Chinese.
BIRTHDAY: 18 February.
AGE: Sixteen.
HOUSE: Ravenclaw
YEAR: Sixth.
ORGANIZATIONS: N/A
HANDWRITING: Elianarelle's Path

MANNER OF SPEECH: Conversational – generally very casual and informal, with a habit of talking in run-on sentences, adding in parenthetical afterthoughts, shifting gears mid-sentence, picking up and dropping off conversation, thinking out loud, and the like. She hardly ever shuts up, it seems, and overall follows a sort of scattered, disjointed ‘stream of consciousness.’ Also, she knows some Chinese and Korean, but much prefers English.

HEIGHT: 5'7”
WEIGHT: 145 lb.
BUILD: Tallish and on the spindly side of average.
EYES: Dark brown.
HAIR: Black.
APPEARANCE:
Su is surprisingly tall for an Asian girl at 5’7”, and likewise kind of lanky. She actually used to be rather chunky, having never really shed her baby fat, but thinned out dramatically the summer after her fourth year during a particularly extended illness. One can tell the most in her face, which doesn’t necessarily look unhealthy in and of itself, but it’s obvious she lost a lot of weight in a short time. That said, she looks rather plain – she has the typical Asian black hair and dark eyes, offset by a small pair of glasses, but lacks the stereotypical Asian ‘cuteness.’ She perpetuates this by throwing her hair back into messy ponytails or updos, though will sometimes leave it down if she’s feeling particularly lazy. She wears literally whatever she happens to pull out of her wardrobe in the morning, though when she actually stops to think about it is addicted to scarves, no matter the weather.
WAND: 13” cherry and phoenix feather.
FAMILIARS: A toad named Thaddeus.

HOME: Southwark, London, England.
PARENTS: Huang Li and Hye Yoon Li [
née Song].
SIBLINGS: Stillborn sister Minhee, who would have been nearly nine years old.
FINANCIAL STATUS: Securely middle-class restaurateurs.
HISTORY: Just past St. Valentine’s Day, the world was blessed with Sino-Korean beauty Su Li… no, I lied. Actually, Su was due on V-Day, and likewise that’s when her mother went in, late on the night of the 14th, in labour. Three days later, when she still hadn’t dilated enough, they finally decided that this baby was just too big to be born naturally anyway. So, not even an hour into the new day, weighing nearly eleven pounds, Su finally came into the world.

After that trial, her parents decided they weren’t going to try for another child, at least for a while. Su didn’t mind; she chatted with the Muggle children in her little Chinese neighbourhood amicably, as well as with the other Wizarding children they’d set her up on play-dates with. However, she went through a distinct phase where she portrayed herself as a boy – she’d dress in baggy clothes, climb trees, play pranks, dip girls’ pigtails in paint, and even insist that they’d gotten her name backwards, and should refer to her as Li rather than Su.

When she was seven and the phase eventually died down to where she was at least not using male pronouns anymore, the whole family got quite the surprise – another baby! Her parents were excited, and with good reason, since it was going much better along than the previous pregnancy had. Su was a close enough call; they didn’t need another incident like that. They’d found out it was another girl, and had already decided to call her Minhee. Su was ready to be the best big sister in the world, and would sometimes ‘knock’ on her mother’s swollen belly to see if her new sister would answer and tell her when she was coming. On the decisive day, 3 November 1987, after a sudden onset of complications much like before, Minhee Li came into the world… stillborn.

Her parents were inconsolable.

Su promised them that she’d grow up and have a daughter and name her Minhee to make up for it. She’d even keep her last name so the whole name would be the same as the sister she was supposed to have.

Eventually, the time came for her to go off to Hogwarts, and it was no surprise for the ever-precocious Su to be Sorted into Ravenclaw practically before the Hat ever touched her head. She found herself well-integrated and well-liked, having at least one friend in every social ‘group.’ Her friends were probably evenly split in the way of gender, and she liked to think of herself as ‘evenly split’ as well. She could play-wrestle and make dirty jokes, then turn around and shoe-shop and paint her nails. She often found herself being asked for love advice from both genders, despite her glaring lack of experience on the subject – she was just seen as being able to see all sides of a situation, and actually make a decision that would avoid hurting anyone involved if it could be helped. She figured the guys asked her because she was a girl and thus understood them, and the girls asked because she hung out with the guys and knew how they worked.

As the years passed, she started finding alternate solutions to problems, hers or otherwise. For example, after stumbling across a Muggle medical text, she decided she had attention deficit disorder, and thus took a dose of a Muggle friend’s Ritalin to test her theory. [It worked, of course, and after prodding her parents, she was diagnosed and put on her own prescription so the poor kid could have his meds back.] She actually rather likes regaling this tale, among others. Currently, she’s grappling with the realization that she likes girls – does she really, or is it just from hanging out with boys too much? Does she actually identify as a boy still, somewhere in her subconscious, or is she just a lesbian? How is she supposed to have a daughter if she isn’t going to be with a man? And why is this the very first thing she hasn’t been honest about?

PERSONALITY:
Su is the type of girl that a stranger would swear they’d met before, or that an acquaintance would feel like they’d known forever. She’s very open and friendly, almost boyishly so, not to mention honest – almost to a fault, as she tends to spout off things [mostly about herself] that are entirely unnecessary. She is brilliant – ‘gifted’ by Muggle standards – and indeed does spectacularly in classes that genuinely interest her. She leaves many of her teachers baffled, as she’ll get perfect test scores, but make bad marks in class overall for forgetting homework, or she’ll look like she’s doodling and daydreaming, so they’ll pick on her to catch her off guard, and she’ll rattle off the answer. That said, she is excited about learning, and whenever a topic of conversation comes up that she isn’t familiar with, she’s commonly known to scream “Research project!” and head to the library to look it up. When she finds something interesting, good luck trying to tear her away, even for meals or sleeping.
OUTWARDLY: What you see is what you get.Su is naturally a very open person, and thus it’s not too much of a stretch to say you know her, even if you’ve only met in passing. On the other hand, she transitions so effortlessly between cliques and genders, adapting to whoever she’s keeping company with at the time, that perhaps it’s a little harder to pinpoint who she really is than one might initially think.
INWARDLY: Despite essentially wearing her heart on her sleeve, Su is very analytical, and if she starts dwelling too much on something [like, say, her sexuality], a sort of mental block sets itself up, and, obsess over it as she might, she has a hard time bringing it to the surface. That said, she gets so wrapped up that she usually can’t tell if she’s being obvious about it or not, and sometimes secretly hopes someone will bring it up, just so she can overcome that block and get it off her chest.
FIRST IMPRESSION: “Don’t I know you from someplace?”
LIKES: Scarves, classic literature, cartoons, comics [though she’s a total DC elitist], crowds, people in general, playing dirty, trivia, learning new things.
DISLIKES: Loners, skiving off, limitations, being sick all the freakin’ time, big empty spaces, wilful ignorance, high heels.
STRENGTHS: She can blend in with any crowd you give her and make at least one friend, if not a handful, so social situations are no problem for her. Also, she can see situations objectively and thus is a natural go-to for advice, and will go out of her way to cheer someone up whether the person is a friend or not.
WEAKNESSES: She quite frankly goes nuts without some sort of company, and if you catch her after having been alone for a while, she’ll have had rather too much time with her thoughts and therefore will become rather clingy. She is also very disorganized and easily distracted, as well as having moments of utter tactlessness.
INTROVERT/EXTROVERT: If she were any more extroverted, she’d be a boy – which might be what she’s aiming for.
PESSIMIST/OPTIMIST: Oh, ever the optimist.
FAITH: None at the moment; she can only obsess over one thing at a time.
PHOBIAS/FEARS: Being alone, disapproval, hospitals, sick people, lightning, and failure.
BLOODLINE: Halfblood.
EYESIGHT: Bad – she was born cross-eyed, and just as she started to show signs of realignment in third year, they discovered slight farsightedness and astigmatism in her left eye. Su’s been practically living in glasses all her life.
HEARING: Normal, when she doesn’t have an ear infection. People just get the wrong idea because she talks so loudly.
LEFT/RIGHT/AMBI: Very ambidextrous, due to constantly switching hands as a child to accommodate when her eyesight would start going wonky.
DISABILITIES: Generally prone to sickness.
DRINKS/SMOKES: She dislikes the taste of tobacco, and would rather not risk getting intoxicated until she hasn’t got anything big to hide. That said, she’s done both socially before, and would do it again if Morag asked her to.
PHYSICAL HEALTH: Not the greatest in the world.

FEARS/BOGGART: It’s silly, and she knows that, but her boggart is being struck by lightning. Sometimes someone is leading her out to it and watching her get struck. This came from an incident not long after Minhee’s death, when she was upset and threatened suicide; her mother took her outside to tell how serious a threat that was, but a storm was starting, and Su jumped to conclusions and suddenly became terrified that her mother was taking her out into the storm to do the job for her! Though she quickly found that wasn’t the case, she’s been haunted by the thought ever since.
PATRONUS: For the longest time, all she could get out of it was a silver wisp with wings, but after relentlessly trying at it until she got something recognizable, she’s almost positive it’s a crane.
RELATIONSHIP STATUS: On hold until she can come to terms with her sexuality. Also, until she finds out if Morag would be willing to, er, give it a go.
SEXUAL PREFERENCE: Homosexual, which she’s dreadfully overanalyzing.
PAST RELATIONSHIPS: N/A
FRIENDS: Morag MacDougal, Michael Corner, Anthony Goldstein,Sally-Anne Perks, others TBD
ENEMIES: Tracey Davis, others TBD

ASTROLOGY:
Aquarius is the eleventh house of the Zodiac and rules the circulatory system, shins, and ankles. Positive traits include brilliance, innovation, individuality, openness, social consciousness, inventiveness, practical skill, and self-assertion; negative traits are eccentricity, lack of attachment to people and the "real world," over-intellectualizing of the emotions, a crotchety temper, rigidity, intellectual arrogance, and stubbornness. The stereotypical geeks of the magical world, Ravenclaw Aquarians are noted mostly for their genius. They are gifted theorists and inventors, and highly talented students. Most wind up doing pure research after graduating from Hogwarts. Their noses are always in books of esoteric lore. Some people may laugh at them, either for their unconventional lifestyles or (more commonly) because they are obvious nerds, but they don't care. While they can have sharp tempers, especially when they encounter ignorance or stupidity, these wizards generally mean well, and have a "live and let live" philosophy. Their wit is legendary; not everybody gets the Ravenclaw Aquarian's jokes, but those who are subtle and intelligent enough find conversation with an Aquarian Ravenclaw to be quite funny, in a satirical and ironic and irreverent sort of way.
